I just watched this video on DTV and it's interesting. It's a CGI short made to demonstrate the capabilities of Blender, a free, open-source animation package. Enjoy...

I was impressed by the complexity of the short but more so by the quality of the CGI from a free software package.

Its temperamental software use it at your own risk.

One minute a full render pass, next minute start again there's nothing there.

For what it is though, it can not be beaten as legally free software.

Internal programs the likes of which Weta Digital ILM and Render Mill use are the industry standards.

Blender is really good though, if you have patience.

Agreed, I've never been able to work with Blender. Fortunately, the cost of CGI software is dropping, have you seen the demo for Element 3D by Videocopilot?
