BREAKING NEWS large explosion in San Bruno, California

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Firefighters are battling a large fire burning on a hillside in the San Bruno area, near San Francisco.

Television live shots show large flames shooting into the air. A South San Francisco fire official confirmed firefighters were responding to a fire, but had no other details.

Witnesses say a loud explosion was felt just before the flames erupted Thursday evening.

The area where the fire is burning in a residential area with several homes now engulfed in flames.


EDIT:
Police were reported as saying they did not know what had exploded. Some of those interviewed on television are saying they heard and saw an airplane crash before the explosion.

The blast spot is west of San Francisco International Airport.

The FAA says they do not believe it was a plane. SFO spokesperson Mike McCarron says no plane from SFO is involved. He deferred further questions to the FAA.

People as far as one-half mile away say they felt the boom and heat of the explosion.

There are reports of mulitple evacuations and cars burning in the street.

There is a PG&E high-pressure gas line in the area. It is unknown if it is related to the fire.

At least 5,000 PG&E customers are without power.

Nearby Mills Peninsula Hospital is reportedly inundated with patients.

SFO has told pilots to switch to instruments due to poor visability.

Residents are gathering at Tanforan shopping center.

The Red Cross is heading to the scene to provide aid to residents.
