BREAKING NEWS USGS: Earthquake strikes northern Sumatra

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on Tuesday, according to the U. S. Geological Survey.

A tsunami alert has been issued after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The quake's epicentre was 204 km (127 miles) northwest of Sumatra's coast, at a depth of nearly 48km, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active areas for earthquakes and volcanoes.

It has recently been struck by string of quakes; one off Sumatra in September killed more than 1,000 people.

A "destructive widespread tsunami" is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, but a local tsunami could affect coastal areas near the quake's epicenter.

That could have some seriously bad implications for Indonesia, that region is really one of the most beautifull area´s of the world!!

This is not good at al... hopefully no tsunami´s will go off because of these shocks :scary:

Three aftershocks were reported in the northern state of Aceh, but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The latest quake struck at 0515 on Wednesday morning (2215 GMT on Tuesday).

Scientists are monitoring data from ocean buoys to determine whether the earthquake already generated a tsunami, said geophysicist Gerard Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

If a tsunami does erupt from the quake in shallow waters, Fryer said, it would be very small and not move much water. Scientists said they do not expect the tsunami to affect the west coast of North America
Japan's Kyodo news agency reported blackouts in Medan and Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province.
Power cuts and panic were reported on Indonesia's Simeulue Island off Aceh. witnesses said.

We have had more major quakes this year than ever before recorded. The frequency that they are occurring suggests that there are changes within the Earth's crust, and they don't look like slowing down. What's next????
