At least seven people are believed to have been trapped under rubble after a highway tunnel collapsed in Japan. Two cars were crushed and several others set ablaze by the cave-in.
Police recovered several charred bodies from the scene. At least three people were injured, according to the local media.
Thick smoke inside the tunnel forced firefighters to wear breathing gear and greatly limits their line of sight, making their work much more difficult.
A stream of people who abandoned their vehicles and were escaping from the tunnel was seen at the other exit, NHK TV reported.

Some 50 to 60 meters of the ceiling was affected in the initial collapse, an East Yamanashi Fire Department official reported. The affected area is some two kilometers from the Tokyo side of the tunnel.
The rescue effort at the 5-kilometer Sasago tunnel was hampered some five hours after the incident over concerns that more panels of concrete ceiling could fall.
