Cannabis May Help Reverse Dementia: Study

It makes most people a little foggy-headed, but scientists are investigating whether an active ingredient in cannabis could actually stave off dementia.
A team from Neuroscience Research Australia is in the early stages of research examining if one of the main active ingredients in cannabis, called cannabidiol, could reverse some of the symptoms of memory loss in animals. Tim Karl, a senior research fellow with the group, said cannabidiol does not have the same psychoactive effects as the main component of marijuana, THC, but it has been found to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and other effects that could be beneficial for the brain. “Back in the day cannabis was used for medical purposes, I'm talking 200 years, 100 years back, then at some point people discovered it had other effects and, as quite often happens in our society, people decided it was a bad drug,” he said. “But it's not one compound, it is a mixture of 60 different compounds, and you just have to look at those different compounds because some of them might be good for you.”
His study involved injecting cannabidiol into mice that had been bred to have similar symptoms as those seen in Alzheimer's, as well as examining what would happen to brain cells treated with the drug. Dr Karl found that when the mice were given the cannabidiol they showed drastic improvement on parts of the tests that were related to recognising and remembering objects and other mice. “It basically brings the performance of the animals back to the level of healthy animals,” he said. “You could say it cured them, but we will have to go back and look at their brains to be sure.” The study was done as part of the PhD of student David Cheng, who has also collected the brains of the mice and intends to examine them to see if they showed physical improvements. As part of the research, which is being presented at the Australian Neuroscience Society annual meeting in Melbourne this week, the team also treated animal brain cells that produced a protein linked to the development of plaques in the brain in humans with Alzheimer's disease, amyloid precursor protein.
The cell research, done at the University of Wollongong, found treating the cells with cannabidiol also reduced the amount of the harmful protein that they produced. Dr Karl said there had been case reports in medical literature of marijuana smokers who had developed Alzheimer's disease, only to find their smoking seemed to relieve some of their symptoms.
“Most of the components [of marijuana] are detrimental, they worsen your cognitive performance and have psychoactive effects… cannabidiol seems to not have any of these negative effects,” he said.

in my opinion cannabis has many health benefits if you use it properly, i was a constant heavy smoker for many years from the age of 11 and by goodness it screwed my mind i was so paranoid i was peeking from behind the curtains with any noise and always thinking that any laughter i heard was directed at me its no way to live
if legalized Cannabis May Help Reverse a country going to shit and solve a nations debt, not to mention the wast parts of the plat that could be used for bio fuel instead of using food crops and the waste from after the bio fuel is extracted can be used to make things like paper and egg boxes, also if it was taxed the gov could get off the poor peoples backs and reduce tax on things like petrol , diesel , electricity and gas

But the other thread says it increases your chances of a stroke...
Now I am all confused....
Let's face it... things are good and bad for us... I don't think I can think of any ONE thing we consume that is 100% ok for everyone, somewhere, someone will have a reaction to something they consume...
(or did I read the stroke thread wrong... did they mean stroke as in .... stroke, the thing that debilitates and kills you.. or did they mean that smoking weed makes you stroke yourself more?)...

Fortes fortuna iuvat
i concur
this is a cool university study.
caught the researchers off gaurd
Calgary — Forget the stereotype about dopey potheads. It seems marijuana could be good for your
brain.
While other studies have shown that periodic use of marijuana can cause memory loss and impair
learning and a host of other health problems down the road, new research suggests the drug could
have some benefits when administered regularly in a highly potent form.

i have over 35 years of indepth research into the affects of chronic marijuana use.puff puff pass
im into my longterm affect research right now.
some of my findings are pretty profound.
it seems to help with the management of some mental disorders, such as dislexia, bipolar, manic depressiveness.
memory loss and loss of cognative abilities seem to be more based on stereo typical thinking, than any reality based studies.
some of my research has branched into law and human rights and a few other fields.
i think its a pretty one sided topic as far as any serious discussion about its pros or cons.
about dyslexia,i remember being four years old and printing and writing with one hand.
when i started school,i remember being taught that i wrote with the wrong hand.
i had no concept of right or left yet.
but i could already write pretty good.
first thing in school i learned that, how i wrote was wrong.that i was using the wrong hand.
the left right lesson was right around the same time
the confusion of that has echoed my whole life.
i think the dyslexia was born in my first week of school.
the bi polar and manic shit seem to be aliviated by the powers of observation that are a side affect of chronic pot use.
anyways all my studies are very bias, cause im a pot head.
