The New Zealand military has released hundreds of previously classified reports detailing claims of unidentified flying object sightings and alien encounters.

The reports, dating from 1954 to 2009, were released Wednesday under freedom of information laws after the New Zealand Defence Force removed names and other identifying material.

In about 2,000 pages of documents, members of the public, military personnel and commercial pilots outline close encounters, mostly involving moving lights in the sky.

Some of the accounts include drawings of flying saucers, descriptions of aliens wearing "pharaoh masks" and alleged examples of extraterrestrial writing.

Before their release, Air Force squadron leader Kavae Tamariki said the Defence Force did not have the resources to investigate UFO sightings and would not be commenting on the files' contents.

"We've just been a collection point for the information. We don't investigate or make reports, we haven't substantiated anything in them," he told the Dominion Post.

One of the most comprehensive files concerns two sightings of strange lights off the South Island town of Kaikoura in 1978, one of which was captured by a television crew aboard a plane in the area.

The incident made international headlines at the time, but a contemporary Air Force report found it could be explained by natural phenomena such as lights from boats being reflected off clouds or an unusual view of the planet Venus.

The original documents on which the newly reports were based will remain sealed in the national archive, some until 2080.

Founding Director of UFO Focus New Zealand Research Network, UFOCUS NZ, Suzanne Hansen, with thirty-five years UFO research experience, studied the incident and said it was inexplicable, unidentified and unusual. Many UFO reports were rejected as being meteors, planet Venus, weather balloons, clouds’ reflections or the moon. One of the official responses to the sightings thanked people for the opportunity to look at their sketches which were returned to them. The original documents that the reports were based on remain sealed until 2080.

United States Air Force Planes Seen Near New Zealand UFO Sightings
A man, who wanted confidentiality and worked for the Transport Ministry's civil aviation division when the Kaikoura lights were sighted, said he would like to see its files. He was working at Christchurch International Airport when he saw USAF planes with unusual call signs scouting the area and believed a complete account about the lights has not been released. He said that the USAF spending three days in the area indicated something unusual was happening. Hansen stated she was frustrated by the delayed release, although she understood confidentiality reasons. UFOCUS NZ was in contact with the New Zealand Defence Force, NZDF for many years. She said it was annoying, from a research perspective, because her organization wanted to collect the Kaikoura sightings for international research. Some sightings might have been those of alien technology, which is scientifically proven to be possible.

Wellington New Zealand UFO Sighting
Jonas, who requested his surname remain anonymous, and his wife saw an unknown flying craft in the sky on July 17, 2008. He said they were drinking coffee on their veranda when they saw what looked like an unusually low flying airplane traveling by Broken Hill Road at an approximate speed of 57to 87 miles per hour at a height of about 437to 547 yards. When Jonas snapped the first photograph, he realized it wasn’t an airplane. It vanished after he took the third or fourth picture.

ew Zealand Releasing UFO Files: Possible Ramifications
Over the years since UFO sightings were initially reported, officials maintained secrecy by offering lame excuses for the spacecrafts, including that they were natural or manmade objects, hallucinations, denying incidents or frauds. According to US and UK reports and news releases, the prevailing motive for this was they didn’t want to create public panic like the one caused when Orson Wells aired the fictional story, War of the Worlds, about a Martian invasion on October 30, 1938 did. Some people maintain that there’s evidence that humans and space aliens exchange beneficial information.

While there have been reports of alien abductions that had negative consequences, positive contact has far outweighed them and some accounts were debunked. It’s possible that aliens, like humans, have good and bad entities. Knowledge dispels fear. It’s possible that educating the public about UFOs and extraterrestrials will greatly help reduce the fear and likelihood of mass panic.

here we go done it for you, copy and paste

Thousands of secret reports on New Zealand UFO sightings have been released, detailing mysterious unexplained sightings from the public and military personnel.

The files include every witness account of unidentified flying objects reported to authorities since early 1952, including the infamous 1978 Kaikoura mystery.

Detailed in more than 2000 pages of files are letters from people who claim to be in touch with alien beings, sketches from witnesses and media reports.

Some of the earliest reports come from the president of the Civilian Saucer Investigation (New Zealand) group, Harold H. Fulton, thanking a witness who wrote to him about a sighting.

The witness had seen a "strange, bowl-shaped object that he saw fall from a clear sky".

"As the object fell it made a hissing sound, hit the wharf pier he was standing on and then bounced high and landed on a Government survey vessel," the letter said.

The files had been held by Archives New Zealand, which was to make them available in February after requests from the public, but the Defence Force stepped in saying it needed to remove personal identification to comply with the Privacy Act.

Access to the original files will be restricted until the year 2050 at the earliest for personal privacy reasons.

Before their release, Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki said the Defence Force would not comment on the files' content.

"We've just been a collection point for the information. We don't investigate or make reports, we haven't substantiated anything in them."

The Defence Force did not have the resources to investigate UFO sightings, Tamariki said.

The director of research group UFOCUS NZ, Suzanne Hansen, said she had been trying to get hold of the files for nearly two years.

"I started lobbying, and at first they said there was no way in the foreseeable future they'd be released. It's been a long time coming."

Hansen said she hoped the files would reveal more detail about some of New Zealand's most famous cases, including the Kaikoura sighting on December 21, 1978.

Wellington man John Cordy, 77, was in the air traffic control tower on that night and still maintains there was no logical explanation for what happened.

He and his colleague witnessed inexplicable radar readings at a time when no aircraft were cleared to be in the area.

At the same time, crew on an Argosy cargo plane reported strange lights around their aircraft, which tracked them for more than 60 kilometres. Numerous theories were put forward, but Cordy said none fitted the bill.
