Climate change and spreading forests killed off the woolly mammoth and its big mammal cousins - not spear-wielding humans, a major new study has concluded.

The demise of the mammoth and other extinct "megafauna", such as the woolly rhino, giant deer and cave bear, is blamed on the loss of grassland across most of the northern hemisphere.

By 11,400 years ago, many of the large animals that once roamed across northern Eurasia and North America had vanished.

Some experts have argued that the rise of our Homo sapiens ancestors was largely responsible for their disappearance.

Human population exploded during this time, posing a new threat to many creatures that were hunted for their meat and skin, or because they were considered dangerous.

People also competed with the mammals for land, placing pressure on their habitats.

But these factors alone could not have led to the extinctions, argue scientists from the University of Durham.

Their findings are part of the most comprehensive study to date of northern hemisphere climate and vegetation during and after the height of the last Ice Age, 21,000 years ago.

The study concludes that a period of post-glacial global warming led to a massive loss of grassland over much of the Earth's surface.

As the prairies and steppes dwindled, spreading forests took their place. The changes made survival impossible for the big grazing herbivores and the predators that fed on them, it is claimed.

But there are frozen mammoths all over the northern hemisphere with food still in their mouths and stomachs??!!!

Climate change is not that fast even when people are burning the evidence against it and telling us not to believe our lying eyes!!!!

I am convinced that the Younger Dryus event approx.13,000 years ago, was ushered in by a comet impact around the Great Lakes Basin in N. America. This caused immediate climate change at the epicenter and flash froze the north eastern and north central portions of N. America. This was just the beginning. The impact would have shaken the land to it's core and a disruption of ice dams would have caused a great inundation. The fresh water released from the failure of the ice dams ending up in the N. Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. This would have caused the North Atlantic conveyer to stall, but not before the burning of the land by the ejecta from the impact. Darkness came and it grew colder and colder, the ice that was on a retreat from the end of the last ice age quickly reemerged upon framiliar and ever new settings. With in 1,600 years The mega-mammales and several early modern human civilizations of the norther hemisphere were all but gone. Evidance can be seen by the Dolumstone cap which covers a region from Lakes Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Also the discovery of mini metioroids found in Michigan and Ohio mines recently, imo is the smoking gun. An arial veiw shows this cap to be very round. Dolumstone being much more errosion resistanrt than limestone and shale, is the reason for the existance of the Niagara Falls River Escarpment. Limestone being formed in salt water dolumstone in fresh / brine water. The comet impact may have formed the cap almost immediately, and may well have caused large tectonic events resulting in a series of step fault to form upon the drop of Lakes Ontario and Superior. The sudden release of billions upon billion of gallons of fresh water quickly carved out the shale and limestone. What emerged from the final retreat of the ice was the dramatically altered land that continues to change today. Examples are found along the St Lawrance Sea Way, Niagara Falls (river gorge), Lechworth Falls (Genesee River Canyon). The Genesee River being the total red headed step child of the event, it flows North! into Lake Ontario, the only river to do so in the upper latitudes. Once again a theory that i suggested in junior high school that was laughed at. Now it seems that time is prooveing me right, and the continued contact of one high school buddy. To truely understand what i am talking about, you must first fall in love with the splender around you, only then will the secrets of the past reveal themselves. The picture is truly HUGE and awe inspireing, reminding me that the planet can change in a blink of an eye, and is to be respected as the ultimate (ALPHA) surviver. All i will ever be or disire to be is an instigator towards reserch. It all started out with (WHAT IF?). NM156

It's my understanding that some were found frozen in their tracks, still standing.
