SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: Sunspot 1319 is Rumbling with C-class Flares (Oct 13th, 2011).

RUMBLINGS: A newly numbered sunspot 1319 near the sun's eastern limb is crackling with C-class solar flares. If the sunspot continues to grow, it could soon produce even stronger M-flares and bring an end to this week's lull in solar activity.

SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: 19 C-class Flares in the Past Two Days. (Oct 14th, 2011)

Although solar activity remains low, will the C-level trend continue? The quiet is unlikely to persist with so many sunspots turning toward Earth.

SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: Sunspot 1319 Poses a Threat for M-Class Flares (Oct 17th, 2011).

CTIVE SUNSPOT: Active region 1319 contains so many individual sunspots that some observers have likened it to a swarm of army ants. The swarm is growing. Over the weekend, the sunspot group's total area nearly tripled as shown in this movie from the Solar Dynamics Observatory:

As AR1319 has grown, the complexity of its magnetic field has increased as well. The sunspot's magnetic canopy is now unstable and harbors energy for strong M-class solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of such an eruption during the next 24 hours.
