Just to contribute:
Today - December 26, 2012 - in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was the hottest day since 1915.
The temperature reached 43.2°C or 109.76°F.
A new record has been established!
The previous record was 43.1°C, in 1984.

Suppose I shoulda put it in here first.

According to this information, we could face serious damage without a CME.

The activity of the Sun is still under investigation; which basically means they are still guessing.

Evil, thanks for posting that here. I did see it the other day and it makes more sense now than ever. We are vulnerable for sure, but that doesn't mean we'll see an event in our lifetimes that could set us back 20 or 50 years.. It perhaps gives us a better understanding as to how we can prepare for such an event if and when it happens. Some will say it's only a matter of time, true, but might be a long time.. So no point worrying your pants off over something we may not even see in our life times.
