The aerogel is what saved all the data samples from our asteroid smashing mission that almost was a failure when the parachute malfunctioned upon reentry.

The problem for aerogel commercially is that the best way to make it is in a weightless environment. Not exactly cost efficient. There are forms of it being used outside of the space industry but it isn't quite the same as the ones you see nasa with.
