Ban caramel colouring in pop for cancer risk: consumer group

Some caramel food colourings in pop could contain cancer-causing chemicals that should be banned, a U.S. consumer advocacy group claims.
While pure caramel is made by melting sugar in a saucepan, the artificial brown colouring in some colas is made by reacting sugars and ammonia and sulphites under high temperatures and pressure.In the artificial process, compounds are produced that animal studies suggest cause cancer, according to a regulatory petition filed Wednesday by the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
The group is calling for a ban on the colouring, known as 4-methylimidazole or 4-MEI."The FDA should act quickly to revoke its approval of caramel colorings made with ammonia,"
