Its the temperature of the water and the length of time the hurricane stays over the water that determines strength. I don't think the amount of water it ingests is a factor but I don't know that for sure.

Holy shit. Excellent point puppet. Seriously that is scary thought. If the oil sits out there soaking up the heat and not cooling off enough at night then it would provide a massive energy source for storms.

That could also contribute to how they are making the prediction for a nasty season and just not telling the mainstream media.
