An object fell from the sky over central Cuba on Thursday night and turned into a fireball "bigger than the sun" before it exploded, a Cuban TV channel reported Friday, citing eyewitnesses.

Some residents in the central province of Cienfuegos were quoted as saying that at around 8 p.m. local time Thursday (0100 GMT Friday) they saw a bright spot in the sky comparable to a bus in size, China's Xinhua news agency reported citing the Cuban TV station.

The object then turned into a fireball "bigger than the sun," said the witnesses, adding that several minutes later they heard a loud explosion.

One resident told the TV station that his house shook slightly in the blast.

Cuban experts have been dispatched to the area to look for possible remains of the meteor-like object, said the report.

It remains unknown whether the reported phenomenon in Cuba is related to Friday's meteor strike in central Russia, which set off a shockwave that shattered windows and left some 1,000 people injured

Stupid question, but what is causing those bright flashes? The meteorite looks like it is already inside the atmosphere.

The "bright flash" is caused as the meteor skips across the atmosphere at 8 times the speed of a speeding bullet. The meteor mostly burns up and fragments as shown in the viral videos. As to your comment that it is already inside the atmosphere, our atmosphere is not simply a layer between air and space but composed of "air" from the ground outwards like a bubble that grows less and less dense the farther away it gets froms earths gravity. The closer the meteor gets to the surface of earth the more air pressure it encounters and inevitably more thermal energy. To claims that space programs and governments knew about this meteoroid (because we predict so many as well as DA14- the one that did a fly by that very same day) the only way we can detect these meteoroids are the light they reflect. The one that burned up over russia was roughly 3 times smaller then DA14 which means it is very very easy to miss.
