Damn, thats on the other side of the state. I have not heard anything about this on the news. Buit I do have a good friend that is a Brand inspector. Not his area but he has access to the whole state records.

For just a note, on the west side in the reservation area, there is a lot of crazy shit that goes on. They have some really creepy ideas about getting revenge on people there. THAT shows up in the news often. I can say, that coyotes can make a mess quickly, and go for the soft parts first. The individuals do seem to believe (by their statement) that people did it. But I'll check with my friend and see what he has to say about this case, and these types of incidences here.

Shit, if it was closer I'ld drive over, but that's like 6hrs one way from me.

I saw a programme that showed how animals can die and not be found, then over time start to decay and look like a mutilation.

Don't say this can not happen because they proved it could

It can happen in a matter of hours easily if fly or maggots eat parts from the inside out this looks like a surgery has taken place

OK, here's what I got. It may answer some questions, and may raise some more questions.
But anyways, this was told to me by my friend, a New Mexico State Brand Inspector.

OK. This starts out, and has a lot to do with the Navaho reservation, differing governing bodies, cultures, and beliefs. There are certain people within that community (navaho), that are reffered to as "skinwalkers", or something to that effect. They are much in comparrison (by what I'm told) to Voo Doo practitioners, like in New Orleans. Some of them, are like hired thugs. To carry out acts of vengance. The person that "Hires" them, may request the skinwalker to attack, or send a message of vengance, of the Coyote, or Crow....etc. So, in fact, as pertaining to the case in this post, the skinwalker killed their favorite horse, and removed the soft parts the coyotes go for first. Symbolic of the animal spirit chosen as attacker. If the Crow was selected, the animal would be killed, but only the eyes removed.

My friend assured me that that has happened. As the interview was in the link, the woman implied it was people (like she had a good idea). As drugs and gangs are a problem, as well as hunting rights, this may have been a revenge by someone that was kicked off the property hunting, could of even had dope planted there somewhere, etc.
That's the take on it by the Brand Inspectors. He echoed my previous statement here, about weird crap goes on all the time in that country.

So, this could be some form of answer, or an excuse not to dig deeper....impossible to tell.

While i never witnessed anything weird..
Northern and eastern new mexico ALWAYS spooked me out a bit, bc you could tell there were alternate beleif systems hard at work there not covered under normal hispanic and white culture. Indian Mythology is rather hard to get a grasp on, even if its explained..becuase of HOW its explained...

And then crow woman got up, and laid the prayer bundle down and asked the spirits to come. And it was like this.
And eagle feather, spoke to the wind..and it was like this...
And the corn corn god twins spoke with grandmother, and she also said..It was like this.

THAT kinda thing..definately not western thought processes at work there at all..

Thx for the follow up..that was cool.
