Tithes = 1/10th was practised widely by the Jews way before Catholicism, and it mutated into income tax which most of us pay now.

Whilst I would argue that the bible is not a set of fairy tales, it does have a mythological thread woven through some historically proven context. This form of story telling has roots in shamanism where the physical journey was experienced through a heightened sense that called upon archetypal constructs residing in the collective unconscious. Therefore whilst the bible is not a fairy tale it may well be a journey of self discovery portrayed historically. This type of thing is still being created and experienced today in other guises.
