I think astral projection is just a lucid dream or something of that nature. I dont believe that people who claim to astral project actually leave their bodies and are free to travel to distant lands or up in the heavens. According to some "astral projectors" they can meet their spirit guides and are able to know the future.....if that were the case...wouldnt one of these people be able to give us a heads up/down about things humankind are dying to know the answers to.....like UFOs, 2012, 9/11,the NWO and the afterlife.

Lucid dreams and OOBEs are two very different things. I've had both. An OOBE can almost be described as the closest you will come to understanding the separation process of death. I am not a practicing projector. I do not believe that the ones who claim to see the future actually do. I see it more of a quantum entanglement. They've seen a possibility, which you and I can imagine while fully awake. They however, get to experience it first hand. But that does not mean that these experiences are the determined outcome. Deep inside, I think they know this.
Projectors have given us the heads up / down on the afterlife. No one believes them, which is a natural thing given that the material evidence is simply not there. We only have their word against beliefs.... But it does work. Try it!

When you find yourself out of the body, your mind takes a backseat. You cannnot command the astral body. It is almost pure emotion, and will go where ever it likes. all you can really do is go along for the ride. Sometimes it's amazing, other times you will wish you hadn't done it. But the thrill of it is awesome. I've only had five or so experiences, but I welcome them every night.
Anyone out there have practical advice on inducing the state?

The idea of an OOBE is simple enough. When you go to sleep, your mind shuts down, and the astral (I prefer the term 2nd Body) goes out for some fun. Your consciousness is asleep during this process. In fact, most people do it regularly. They just don't know its happening. So your goal is to either be aware of when the separation takes place (which can be freaky), or to "wake up" while the 2nd body is out. The first step is the most difficult, but if you get used to it... Well... Try this...
1. When you wake up in the morning, try to stay half asleep but focus on getting your body to go back to sleep. The point of this exercise is to see how long you can maintain consciousness. This is an important step. I recommend you do it at night as well. But the morning seems easier for me...
2. Imagining this next part is easy, and don't be alarmed when it becomes real. Fear is your enemy. If you panic, the whole thing is a wash. Imagine your body begin to vibrate. Imagine the tingling feeling beginning at your feet, and slowly move this sensation upwards. You will have to imagine this the first few times. But you will know when it begins for real. It will in fact be a bit thrilling. Don't worry, you will be safe, and I'm still among the living and have done this a few times. The important factor here is that you need to imagine that as the vibrations take over your body, and they will seem to get louder or faster, your body is getting lighter. Go with this, and encourage the body to vibrate and become lighter.
3. At this point, most of us fall asleep. This is ok. You are learning, and if anything, your dreams should be interesting. Keep going. BUT! Everytime you are feeling yourself falling asleep, make these little phrases your mantra:
I choose to be awake when I'm out! I am going to remember everything that happens when I leave the body!
Most important... You have to believe that this is what you want to achieve for two reasons. One, because if you do it will happen faster, and two... There's no turning back.

@ Rabbit
The ability to run and jump upwards of hundreds of feet and come down like a cat is one of my favorites, but they are so few for me. But I'm getting better at it! As for the distance thing... I have gone so far out (the most profound experience) that I saw things that are very difficult to describe. Wonderful things.
However, more recently I was also attacked while out, which totally sucked. I was finally out and aware only to be accosted by monkeys or forms that certainly acted like them. It freaked me out, and I snapped back in.

Ive often thought i was on the astral plane, but i think it was just my imagination.
I do not astral travel.
However, I have had waking dreams / lucid dreams / Night terrors since childhood. They are the most terrifying thing that I can possibly imagine, and then some. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. That would just be too horrible.
