What he condemned more than anything was the hypocrisy of the self proclaimed righteous. He tended to go to where the hurting were, the people considered inferior, the tax collectors, the beggars; he went to the people that desperately sought a way out of their predicament, because they were the ones that were true in heart.

The piousness of the Pharisees really ticked Jesus off. Because they refused to admit their faults while hiding them behind an outward veil. They deemed themselves pure by following the letter of the law, but not the heart of it.
