You're right. I've heard many explanations for Jesus' rant on the money changers at the temple - but the way I have resolved it with myself - seems logical anyway, is that the money changers had turned the temple into WalMart. They sold different animals for different sacrifices for different levels of sin. Of course this would piss Jesus off, because it was a lucrative business that never satisfied the hunger for the people wishing to find redemption from their admitted transgressions. So some poor schmuck comes in with only enough money for a pigeon, realizing that his sins need an unblemished lamb, and there is no blue light special. The poor schmuck walks away still haunted, and the pigeon seller lines his pockets. Of course this flies in the face of what Jesus was about, and his entire mission was to do away with the old law - hence, why he became the ultimate sacrifice and said to believe in him to allow your guilt to be free and not get caught up in the capitalism of the temple.

That's the nuts and bolts anyway.
