'Meteor' Filmed Plummeting To Earth In Peru
Amateur footage has shown a suspected meteor flying through the sky near the Andes mountains in Peru.
Officials have so far been unable to discover any potential landing area after the sighting near Cusco in the south of the country.
Meteors are fragments of rock or metal falling towards earth from space.
Millions fall every day but nearly all burn up long before they reach Earth and struggle to get within 30 miles of the planet's surface.

Looks like something else to me. I'd think a meteor big enough to be traveling that slowly across the sky should've left a sizeable impact crater where ever it landed.

So many 'amateur astronomers' are claiming it can't be a meteorite simply because it is going too slow. Well all they need to do to get proven wrong is watch the video images of the Peekskill meteorite that fell in Peekskill N.Y. on October 9, 1992. It was traveling very slowly and actually landed on a car.

I stand corrected.
And I wouldn't even be brazen enough to call myself an amateur astronomer. Armchair astronomer is more like it.

I wasn't talking about you nihilgeist, I would have came to the same conclusion as you, that meteorites cannot travel that slowly had I not been a meteorite hunter/collector and done research on them before. I especially like to research witnessed falls in North America since I live there. I was talking about people on the linked site at the top of the thread that are all claiming it is impossible for a meteor/meteorite to fall that slowly because they are amateur astronomers who watch meteor showers all the time. It's kinda like a story I told my wife recently when we found a cicada molting off it's shell. When I was a child I witnessed hundreds of cicadas molt in Indiana, then one day I found a strange one on a tree that was whitish while molting. Turns out once it was free of the shell that it was white with pink eyes, it was an albino cicada. Albinos statistically speaking are 1 in a million (not sure the exact number) phenomenon right? Well it just so happens that day as a child I basically witnessed a similar event to Peekskill, one odd and rare occurance.

Great point ufologist. There are already several respected meteorite hunters heading down to Peru to interview witnesses and possibly attempt to recover pieces of it, whatever it was.
