Near miss! Asteroid as strong as 15 atomic bombs whizzes past earth

Image

An asteroid as strong as 15 atomic bombs whizzed past earth last night at just ten times the distance of the moon.
Astronomers first spotted the cigar-shaped rock spinning through space on Monday evening and tracked it.
The star-gazers were baffled by why the asteroid 'blinked' at them until they realised that due to is long shape, the darkness came when it rotated slightly out of view.
Thankfully, the 50m long rock that could have destroyed a small country went barely noticed as it passed earth at a distance of some 2,085,321 miles.

Was that '2011 GP59' because that was up to 80m long and only 1.4 luna distance yesterday. :o

That sounds like Darth Vader narrating. Do you happen to know what documentary that is from?

I personally do not believe in coincidences, and I find it rather odd that the guy who discovered the comet, name is ELEnin.

I'm pretty certain that top level astronomers have know about its existence long before this guy spotted it.

Sorry mate.. Haven't got a clue what program it was. Just stumbled across it. Seems old though.?

Something else i have read is that Elenin will be passing closely to a number of asteroids.

What effect will it have on them.? One of them is 4.1km across.. :o
