The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee has been discussing the Syrian crisis at length.

It believes that chemical weapons were used in Syria last week and it has condemned that alleged use. However, the Committee is less sure about who to blame.

The Foreign Affairs Committee says it is concerned for the huge number of refugees who have fled Syria. Many have left behind loved ones who have been killed. It's estimated that over 100,000 people have died during the past two years of fighting in Syria. There is concern that Syrian civilians now face a new threat posed by an outside attack.

The conflict has also dominated the first meeting of European Commissioners following the Brussels summer recess. The Commission has issued a statement stressing the need for United Nations inspectors to be protected while they carry out their work in Syria.

The Foreign Affairs Committee here at the European Parliament is stressing to the international community that it is not too late to initiate a fresh political dialogue and ultimately a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict. That plea, however, would appear to be falling on deaf ears as the United States and Britain edge ever closer to a military intervention.
