Compact Fluorescent Lights Dumping Mercury Directly into Landfills
http://www.naturalnews.com/028034_mercu ... ights.html :rtft:

A report released in 2008 from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection revealed that when a CFL bulb is broken, it can release dangerously high levels of mercury into the air. Mercury-vapor standards generally allow for 300 nanograms of mercury per cubic meter of air, however a broken CFL bulb can emit upwards of 50,000 nanograms per cubic meter, or more than 166 times the safe upper threshold.'

Don't break one in your home folks! :scary:

Great post,Not many people know about the dangers of these bulbs. If one breaks in your home evacuate for atleast 15 min. do not touch the broken material(use a mask while raking the broken contents with anything that keeps your hands from touching it into a dust pan)make sure you have removed every last piece of glass before your family comes back in the area.It is ashame that there are no warnings on these packages. The murcury can cause liver damage, brain damage, and could be fatal if inhaled(like right after the break happens)
There are a couple vids on youtube about the issues with these bulbs. What is scary is that these bulbs are supposed to completely replace all the old style kind by a certain date or time coming up.
Enjoy the ride...

Yeah thanks for the vids Pindz!! :flop:
Lucky for me i have stocked up on the old bulbs,i've got a good 10 years worth at least...lol...yeah seriously!!..I aint going to be hypnotised with no mercury bulb... :D
I think the real reason i stocked up was OK i knew about the mercury..not good but the light you get from the 'energy saving' bulbs is ludicrous....i then came to the conspiratorial conclusion that this is to stop us reading books.. :?: :D I'll be using candles before i use these 'new' bulbs

All this is true, but really it sounds worse than it is. If you were in a confined area and dropped a florescent bulb and inhaled the vapor you're not gonna die.

Worse case, if it was a large mercury vapor bulb like the one they use in parking lots and you dropped it in a small space like a shower stall (no idea how or why that would ever happen, but is just an example) worst case, for men anyway they will get a little limper from then on. If you know what I mean. Mercury does that.

Do it over and over again, like if you work HVAC or electrical and have a lot of accidents over the years yeah it can make you stupid. Thing is, as bad for you as mercury is, kids used to play with it in the 50s because the t-1000 like effects were fun.

It is funny, I have seen person break a florescent in a commercial building and people ran out of the room like someone dropped a live grenade. I laughed anyway.

They should be doing more with LEDs I think. But it isn't really practical to have LED for ceiling lights, lamps etc. in fact pretty silly. Besides, there isn't as much money to be a made there.... LEDs can last for a long long time. There is no bulb, it is a diode.
