Yeah food slightly lags behind oil, and oil is taking a huge beating right now. crude is going over 120/b, and some estimates say it will eventually reach 300/b.

If you do see food prices start to get crazy, or people start to clean supermarkets dry, you need to IMMEDIATELY talk to friends and neighbors about planting food. Either buy/build pots, and fill them with soil you find around town or start planting seeds in any open patch of dirt you can find. The more wild food there is, the less panic there will be and it's a good foothold to build more crops for a long term food crisis.
PLANT FOOD EVERYWHERE!!!!
STORE FRESH WATER!!!!
Although extracting fresh water is a lot easier than developing food content. Water is most important but FOOD is the thing that's difficult to have ready in time of need.

Commodities and food have been constantly on the rise since the Giant collapse, this seems like something that has been consistent....
what makes it different now? the government shutting down?

Which giant collapse are you talking about? 2008?
But it's been increasing drastically lately. Sugar prices went up 4% in one month just as one example. I haven't seen prices spike in such a short time in my lifetime. I'd hate to predict it will get worse but that's what it looks like when you consider other factors such as oil, the wars, the disasters, the global economy, etc.

DAMN!

As far as I know the reasons why it's different now (in short) :
Food (price) is now controlled on a global scale.
Much of the price of food depends on the price of oil (agricultural machines, fertilizer, pesticides, transportation)
Natural disasters (extreme weather) caused damage to crops / plants worldwide for several years now.
Mono cultures / gm seeds mean death of the soil and that is maybe the killing blow for harvests around the world.
Vast agricultural areas will come into big trouble because 'we' stopped the natural water cycle.
