.......oh f*ck me...

Japanese Nuclear Expert: ‘When I try to figure out the true magnitude of damage, I am overwhelmed’ — Almost all of Fukushima Prefecture would be abandoned if gov’t regulations were applied. This is a catastrophe for all of Japan.
.
.
.

If the spent fuel pool or the reactor 4 building collapses for whatever the reasons, and if spent fuel rods pile up in one place, cooling becomes impossible, which means that even before meltdown occurs, it is possible that the fuel rods could rupture, as a result, there is a possibility that gradual release of the radioactive materials could occur.

Great thread again 57Ironman,

I want to just add another factor in for all to think about.

Many people seem to be concerned with the food blow by [winds ect].

What about the raw materials which come from Japan and or that region? I do not know the effects on the raw materials or the manufacturing from any. I was just curious thanks to this thread. I thought I would post some things I found.

Tritium

WHAT IS TRITIUM?
• Radioactive materials that decay spontaneously such as tritium produce ionizing
radiation.
• Tritium is a radioisotope of hydrogen, with a specific activity of almost 10,000
curies per gram.5
• Tritium has the same chemical properties as hydrogen. Tritium can combine with
oxygen to make water.5
• Tritium is depicted as hydrogen-3, and it is called tritium oxide or tritiated water.
Tritium cannot be filtered out of the water.4
• Tritium contains two neutral particles called neutrons. These extra particles make
tritium unstable. They emit low-energy beta radiation.4
• The large scale production of tritium is produced by irradiating lithium-6 with
neutrons in a nuclear reactor resulting in the formation of tritium and helium.3
• Tritium is also produced as a by-product of nuclear power reactors.
• Tritium has a half-life of 12.35 years.3
• Most of the hydrogen in our body exchanges readily with tritium.2

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT TRITIUM?
• Tritium was discovered in 1932 by Lord Rutherford, Sir John Cockroft, Ernest
Lawrence, Luis Alvarez and Willard Libby.3
• Tritium is found in the leachate of landfills.
• Tritium will absorb onto the surface of most metals, such as stainless steel, copper
or aluminum.1
• Tritium will absorb onto the surface of plastics and rubbers.1
• Water and heating can decontaminate but high temperatures may allow decaying
tritium buildup of helium within the structure of the metal.1
• The most commonly encountered forms of tritium are tritium gas and tritium
oxide. Some tritiated gases are methane and ammonia.
• The next most common form of tritium is tritiated pump oils and solvents.1
• Tritides of metals are titanium, niobium, and zirconium.
• Tritium is used as a tracer in medicine.3
• Tritium is used to make traffic exit signs.
• Industry wants to relax the standards on radionuclides and radiation protection for
the public.5

• Any health effects from tritium are the result of beta radiation emissions.4
Beta radiation when it passes through the body can strip away electrons which can
produce permanent changes in cells (cancer, genetic effects and effects on
fetuses).
• Tritium’s radiation cannot penetrate the skin, so exposure comes mainly from oral
intake or inhaling.
• Once tritium is inside the body, it can do harm to the tissues and eventually the
DNA.4
• Tritium oxide can enter the body in various ways. It can be inhaled as water
vapor, absorbed through the skin or consumed.4
• Tritium oxide can mix with body fluids. The rate of elimination varies with the
person.4
• Tritium can transform into other chemicals such as proteins that are needed by the
body.5
• Tritium can become part of the DNA.
• Tritium water is processed by plants, animals, and humans.
• Studies show that tritium can be passed to the fetus and infant through the
placenta and breast milk.2
• Inhaled tritium gas dissolves into the blood stream and circulates in the body
before being exhaled.1
• If tritium reaches the body fluids, it is converted to tritium oxide within the
intestinal tract.1
• Early experiments show an increase in tritium oxide (HTO) concentrations in the
urine when exposed to tritium.1

Beta Radiation

Beta Radioactivity
Beta particles are just electrons from the nucleus, the term "beta particle" being an historical term used in the early description of radioactivity. The high energy electrons have greater range of penetration than alpha particles, but still much less than gamma rays. The radiation hazard from betas is greatest if they are ingested.

Beta emission is accompanied by the emission of an electron antineutrino which shares the momentum and energy of the decay.

These rays can come from radioactive decay:

Alpha radiation you lose 2 protons and 2 neutron

Beta neutron turns into a Proton and you get an electron thrown into boot.

Gamma the Proton turns into a Neutron and you lose an electron

When these happen the rays are also emitted as a byproduct of the chemical interaction

I just wanted to bring up the fact that parts of the world import much from Japan.

Image

For example....

Japan stainless steel exports rise 37.6% M-o-M in Feb; imports down by 13.3%: JISF

TOKYO (Scrap Monster): Japanese stainless steel exports increased sharply by 37.6% month-on-month to 106,080 tons in February while its imports declined by 13.3% month-on-month to 13,243 tons as per latest data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF).

According to the JISF data, the country’s average export prices of stainless steel were at $4,074/ton, decreased by 14.8% from January. The export values generated by stainless steel amounted to $432.196 million.

In February, China was the largest importer of the Japanese stainless steel with 24,426 tons, rising by 67.4%; South Korea was the second largest one with 20,932 tons, soaring by 46.9%; Taiwan was the third largest one with 9,717 tons, increasing by 82.2%; the US was the fourth largest one with 8,618 tons, up by 40.8% and Thailand was the fifth largest one with 8,920 tons, jumping by 9.8%, all compared to that in a month earlier.

So lets all be aware that it does go much deeper.

Hope the post was not to much IM?

Your prb may be not only the size, but also the format. Not sure if png works. 640 max on width More in info in the members rule section. Also I always try to upload jpg, not png. I could be wrong .

So that said..

Click image you will get...[img] [img]

Now between the inside brackets ][ palce the image url or link. http://s11.postimage.org/p6wa3ssv7/Avia ... ture_1.png

I will do it below this is the image that you had tried to post but I assume the width was to wide.

PNG
Image

I had to capture the above image and then resize in order for it to show. So the one below is saved as jpeg

Image

If two images show up then png does work. I posted both for efficiency sake. Watch the width height and read rules. I have seen requests for one to make instruction videos but not sure if any are about as of yet. Good luck.

Sorry about busting up the thread 57Ironman

I will throw this in to get you back on track. Thank you for the update thread :flop:
