Necessary? Not usually, but there are medical cases where it is necessary. Mostly it's due to cleanliness issues and other non-life threatening medical issues. Point is, it doesn't take much time to look for the answers of why on your own. As we are all capable of using the internet. I have no desire to spend my time searching, then copy/paste reasons and sources regarding my comment about circumcision.

My take on the health issue is: we were designed (or have evolved) very cleverly. I think that there is probably not much about our bodies that requires any alteration at birth. However, since we live somewhat out of balance with nature at this point (in my opinion), there may indeed be higher incidences of infections in uncircumcised kids and adults, and honestly, I haven't bothered to wade through recent studies to find out.

I seriously doubt that any God, though, at least one I could trust or believe in, would REQUIRE circumcision as part of some covenant.

However, if Jews, Muslims, Christians or anyone else chooses to continue the practice - for whatever reason - I say let them...

It hardly ranks with clitoral circumcision in my eyes, but I have to say - even that - as barbaric as it seems to us, is a part of cultural traditions we can hardly begin to understand or judge. The big problem is when those cultures come in contact with the modern world, and that in itself is the cause of more grief and misery than many ancient tribal practices themselves.

Personally, I generally avoid any type of self-mutilation (though I did have an ear pierced when I was young and I used to stick needles in my arms - but that's another story...), including tattoos, but that's my choice - and I have nothing against tattoos. I like some of them a lot...

My typical culturally relativistic viewpoint has once again led me in circles, lol...

The vast majority of the medical reasons for circumcision have been refuted in the last few decades since knowledge about hygiene has taken over, and now people choose circumcision primarily for aesthetic reasons. Because there is no longer any drive to circumcise 10,000 babies in order to prevent one man from getting cancer, various human rights groups, children's groups, and liberals have now jumped on the band wagon that circumcision is child abuse (at least in the US) because it is performed on boys when they are 1-2 days old and too young for anesthetic, and that supposedly cut men have trauma issues no matter their age when they had the procedure (imo, these have only recently been thrust upon men via this new movement, who now teach that a cut man is "incomplete"). The pickle in the jar though is that the younger the boy is, the less likely it is for things to heal incorrectly.

The new push is for parents to "let him choose" when he is older... but the older a man is when he gets circumcised, the greater the complications. I think we're going to go through at least one more generation of experimentation before things even out on the issue.
