If you look at the baskets on the top of the first major pillar stone you see a basket!
It is strange that people would carve a basket #1 and it is also strange that the basket matches EXACTLY ALL the other baskets carved in stone (Throughout history) in Egypt, Mayan and other places and times (Iraq) All these Baskets are the same EXACTLY . Why are they the same? and why would you spend the time to carve in rock these baskets? Unless they were VERY important!! These could have been anti-gravity devices UFO controls or who knows.
What do you think? Am I off base or what?!

acooldude, well picked up. I thought the same when I saw it about a year ago. And there I thought I was the only one in the world to think that.
First I was perplexed that Time magazine mentioned in their article that they found pillars with 'ETCHINGS'. When I looked at the Pillars, they were CARVED.
Maybe you are like me.Wondering why the Hell isn't this archeology's biggest priority ?
I gather you know a bit, so I will get to the point :
When I first did my research on Sumeria, they thing that always irked me was that nobody made allowance for the time it takes to reach a certain level of society. Its as if Ancient Sumeria popped up out of the blue, fully formed and operating. Now for anyone who has traveled to poor countries(Me), I can tell you that even after 2000 years typically farmers will only marginally change the way they do things. I was born in Australia, and in 1967 visited southern Italy.. where my grandparents still lived.. no running water, no gas, no electricity, no plumbing/toilet. I had to go down to the stream to fetch water... and u can imagine the spartan lifestyle. So as it is, no way do these happen without something in the background.. iat least 'TIME' as in centuries.. or millenia.. a precursor civilization to some degree.
Some Speculations :
IMHO, the basket could contain the dna to create life. The 'basket' is water which signifies life.. so I am not drawing a low bow. Depicted with the God Marduk.
If you look at the structures they are circular, and contain a well in the middle. Not a bad thing to have if you were keeping animals.
The Pillars have different animals sketched.. from under the sea, to land to sky.
The circular structures don't have simple a door, the entrance swirls into the main area. This space can be closed off and still keep storage under cover.
The area was covered over with dirt... perhaps to protect against micro meteor showers.. or perhaps extreme Sun Flares.. the cover was for safety. Perhaps they were protecting themselves against the very thing that killed everything off. We wonder why Megaliths exist all over the world , yet the common denominator is that nobody knows who built them and how. Prior to G.Tepi who knows what sort disasters came over the earth... Sun Flares... Floods... Tiamat ?
Again the complexity poses the same question... how long did it take to reach that level of technology ? We were coming out of the Ice age for Gods sake.. what about that ?
How archeologists can call it a place of worship amazes me. How many bloody temples do you need ? There would have been more priests than people according to our history. (tongue in cheek.. but still a serious consideration)
I looked at the carvings very closely , zooming in and out.. but other than the 'basket' I could not find any other link. I am sure there is , and hopefully someone can find it.
Good luck with your research, let me know if you come up with anything.

Could these just not be a symbolic interpretation of an offering, erm
we still use these Basket symbols today for different occasions
i.e Easter baskets

contain food offering that are specific to religious belief
Butter Lamb – through the blood of the lamb, the Israelites were saved (Ex. 12). Jesus is our Passover or Paschal Lamb who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:35-36).
Horseradish – represents the bitter herbs eaten in the Passover meal as a reminder of the bitterness of slavery in Egypt (Ex. 12).
Bread – a Passover component (Ex. 12) and a reminder of Jesus in the Eucharist, the true bread of everlasting life (John 6).
Wine – the drink of the Passover meal and the Last Supper (Mt. 26:26-30). A reminder of the Blood of Christ.
Ham/Sausage – Pork was prohibited in the Old Testament. The New Testament, however, gives freedom (Acts 15). Sausage links show the chains of death Jesus broke at Easter (Exsultet).
Eggs – Jesus breaks forth from the tomb as a chick breaks from its shell. It is fitting to decorate eggs as a sign of our belief in Christ’s Resurrection.
Harvest/Thanksgiving festival Basket

A Harvest Festival is an annual celebration which occurs around the time of the main harvest of a given region. Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times throughout the world. Harvests festivals typically feature feasting, both family and public, with foods that are drawn from crops that come to maturity around the time of the festival. Ample food and freedom from the necessity to work in the fields are two central features of harvest festivals: eating, merriment, contests, music and romance are common features of harvest festivals around the world.

Good thought but the size of them leads me to a different train of thought but you may be correct. Thanks for the post.
