Gunman taken down by US Capitol Police
WASHINGTON — Police shot and wounded a man as he waved a gun at them early Friday just two blocks from the US Capitol, an officer said.
US Capitol Police responded to a 5:00 am (0900 GMT) report about an armed man at an intersection next to a Library of Congress building and one block from US congressional offices.
"Officers observed him... brandishing a weapon, and the officers fired shots," wounding the suspect, Sergeant Kimberly Schneider told AFP. No officers were wounded in the incident.
She said there were no other suspects, and the man was taken to a local hospital, where his status and identity were not immediately released.
The last time a similar incident occurred on Capitol Hill was in July 2009, when a man driving a stolen car fled police conducting a traffic stop, injured two officers in pursuit, and then crashed near the Russell Senate Office Building.
He pulled out a weapon, and US Capitol Police shot and killed him
