The media is about to have an interesting dilemma.
Will they report the truth about these events, as they increase?
The Haitians are notorious for doing things like this...turning on those there to help.
There is a VERY un-PC truth lurking right under the surface, and while its super popular to find a way to blame america even for Haitis problems, the truth is much more close to home, about responsibility for the conditions in that country.
My father monitored elections twice there, and came away with a sense of hopelessness, because their tendency to let the mob thought process grab hold of them is ridiculously strong. Even the Haitians did not understand why it was this way.
No rhyme, no reason...just Violence and Mob rule, even during normal times.

#5 Shoot back at the people shooting at you, stop giving them aid
#6 Address problems in our own nation first.
#7 Get our American citizens out of there
#8 Stop asking me to send money to Haiti
#9 Remember that Americans come first, always!

Low, it is all about culture and family structure. Unfortunately, I had to learn that the hard way. A country's political structure/culture is just a macro version of the family structure/culture. People who live in extremely stratified, authoritarian families with a dominant male at the head demanding absolute loyalty and obedience will only function in political structures that demand loyalty and obedience. They cannot function successfully in any other structure. They have never learned responsibility; they have never learned how to think; they have never learned how to make a decision or form an opinion. They can't think creatively either. They literally are dependent on others to tell them what to do.
Likewise, cultures that have a more egalitarian family structure (where dominance is shared by both the male and female heads of household, and children have an opinion of various power) function much better without being micro-managed. Each member of the family learns how to think about options and make decisions; they learn to determine what the consequences of their decisions are on themselves and others, and they learn responsibility for themselves and for others through this method. They learn how to coordinate and communicate with each other in order to accomplish goals.
The problem is that we (middle and upper class Americans, Canadians, British, French, German etc) expect people from poor and authoritarian cultures to behave as we would. The thing is, they don't value (or they sometimes flat out despise) the skills required to maintain order and functionality in a community that doesn't have a strong leader. They literally fall apart because they don't know what to do. They wait for others to tell them what to do and how to do it,
This is why forcing democracy on other countries doesn't work. If you take away the authoritarian head, the country falls apart. Instead of working together, people fight over absolute control (warlords etc). Essentially, they fight themselves. They suppress themselves.
What are the Haitians doing to help their own situation? Are the healthy ones sitting around waiting for aid, or are they leaving the city to get information that might help them? What are the Haitians outside of Port au Prince doing? Are they working on ways to bring freshwater to the people of the city? Are they donating blood? We know that some Haitians have cell-phones that are working... Are they communicating with aid workers?
The answer is: NO. Instead, they are creating road blocks which is worsening their situation, and throwing food on the ground and stomping on it because one hot-head in a crowd thinks it is expired- so everyone lets him make the decision for the crowd because they are dependent on others to tell them what to do. (I don't know about you, but I would read it for myself. And if I couldn't read, I still would eat it!)

I'm going to have to agree with you there Low, these people are not only dillusional with their mentality the fact that the way their country is run puts them in a constant turmoil based on their circular logic..
These people need help, that is apparent and I would hope someone would help me in the same situation, however when they are shooting you for helping them that is when you pack up the bags and say FUCK IT, DEAL WITH IT YOURSELF, and control your own people, maybe then we can come back when it is safe for HELPERS to deal with SAFE civilians of good natured intent. but the ignorance and "Hero" mentality is what keeps people going.
that last statement is to not include the genuine good individuals that are there to save a life.
