Here is an interesting story...
So, I have been looking to move out of the apartment I am in now. I find a nice one, perfect price, probably couldn't find a better deal. So I am about to take it basically, and I notice a tan brick building behind the house it is in, across an alley. I start looking closer, and notice a familiar looking sign. I walk around to the front and there it is, on a large wooden sign:
"(my town's name) Masonic Lodge" along with a memorial of one of the leaders that had been there...
So I am not taking that one.

LOL. My kids did their elementery school years across from one in our town. I never saw a soul at that place. I even sat on the steps to wait for the kids. A lot of parents parked in their lot waiting for kid to be dismissed from classes. No one ever said a thing.
A friend an I have been keeping our eyes on it since I found it. I knew they had alot of lodges around KS but I always thought that my town was clear of them. The one I found has a building permit in one window, so they are doing something. Also, the lights in the basement windows are on at night sometimes. There is another symbol on the wooden sign along with the Mason square and compass. It is an upside down pentagram, each point is a different color, and there is a small picture in each point. I remember a crown in one, and a wine glass, or goblet with small worm looking things inside. Anyone know what this sign is for?

I studied clairvoyance across the road from the masonic lodge in my city.
As "secret" societies go, they aren't very discreet
Oh, and the sign you saw is hermetic.
The points represent spirit (crown), air(sword), water(cup), fire(candle) & earth(mushroom/bundle of wheat or whatever that is).
It's pretty much triple redundancy symbolism. The points themselves represent the elements, but they add colour and images to reinforce the association. However, it would appear that n the image I found below, the colours used don't match the symbols. And Yes, that does spell out "FATAL" in the middle

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts who had been an official with the Freemasons. It is based on teachings from the Bible,[1] but is open to people of all monotheistic faiths. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately one million members under its General Grand Chapter. Members of the Order are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally, a woman would have to be the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a master Mason, but the Order now allows other relatives[2] as well as allowing Rainbow Girls, Triangle Girls, and Job's Daughters to become members when they become of age.

I would imagine they would have building permits since most are probably construction workers of some sort. Mason is a stone worker or brick layer.
