You might like:
jan. 26, 2011, CAPE EVANS, Antarctica -- A wood-framed hut perched on the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf has remained a time capsule of sorts for the past century.
Its contents are testimony to the "Race to the South Pole" one hundred years ago this month between British naval officer Robert F. Scott (photographed here in 1900) and Norwegian Roald Amundsen. The race led to glory and death for Scott, victory (and near obscurity) for Amundsen.
But if Scott lost that incredible race, how did he become the hero and Amundsen a footnote to history?
"People are inspired by what he did even though he failed to get back from the South Pole," said David Washer, supervisor of New Zealand's Scott Antarctic Base, which is named after the English explorer. "There' something about the way he did it, with a lot of the Englishman's stiff upper lip style, that still hangs in with us."

I would say he was both, a heroic failure - much like the rest of us!
That's why his story touch's with people and they remember him for it, Amundsen succeeded, and disappeared to a footnote in history, whilst Scott is remembered and even idolised - because we're all heroic failures and we can connect to him - afterall, don't we all have some failure in our lives? - But it's the will and guts to try, even if we fail, that's make the hero.

The English love their heroic failures, and Captain John Franklin was one of the great heroic failures of the 19th century. In 1845 he took two British Navy ships, Erebus and Terror, and more than 120 officers and men to try to navigate the Northwest passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The ships were trapped in the ice and all of the men died.
As the song puts it,
Through cruel hardships the mainly strove
Their ship on mountains with ice was drove
Only the Eskimo in his skin canoe
Was the only one that ever came through.
When he disappeared, the Navy sent search parties and offered a huge reward. There were searches by others as well, more than 40 in all. Later, statues of Franklin were raised in his home town of Spalding and in central London. The passage was successfully navigated by boat 60 years later by Amundsen, brought up on stories of Franklin’s doomed voyage.

At the end of the 20th century Shackleton was "rediscovered",[2] and rapidly became a cult figure, a role model for leadership as one who, in extreme circumstances, kept his team together to accomplish a survival story which polar historian Stephanie Barczewski describes as "incredible".[3]

Some say that he's a hero, the chosen one...

But some say that he's a failure...

Go figure ????
