'Hitler' clothing store stirs anger in India

The owner of an Indian clothing store said Wednesday that he would only change its name from "Hitler" if he was compensated for re-branding costs, amid a growing row over the new shop.

The outlet, which sells Western men's wear, opened 10 days ago in Ahmedabad city in the western state of Gujarat with "Hitler" written in big letters over the front and with a Nazi swastika as the dot on the "i".

"I will change it (the name) if people want to compensate me for the money we have spent -- the logo, the hoarding, the business cards, the brand," Rajesh Shah told AFP.

He put the total costs at about 150,000 rupees ($2,700).

Shah insisted that until the store opened he did not know who Adolf Hitler was and that Hitler was a nickname given to the grandfather of his store partner because "he was very strict".

"I didn't know how much the name would disturb people," he told AFP by telephone from Ahmedabad. "It was only when the store opened I learnt Hitler had killed six million people."

Members of the tiny Jewish community in Ahmedabad condemned the store's name, while a senior Israeli diplomat said the embassy would raise the matter "in the strongest possible way."

In India the swastik is not a bad sign. I have spent years in India and its commonly associated with Lord Ganesha and Life. Its plastered all over medical equipment.

its funny watching german tourists have a fit when they see it everywhere though.

However its not normally orientated in the way that idiot has it. though I recall walking through Pondicherry (a former french colony) one night and i saw hanging outside someones house a familiar scarlet flag with a white circle containing the nazi swatika... my Polish wife wasnt impressed.

your average indian has no knowledge of Hitler or the second world war, except there were more Simon English in the country than usual...

That is interesting Bandanko. I'm in the usa and can't fathom living in a society that IS NOT saturated with world war two propaganda, including the holohoax brainwash.

Only $2,700 for all those business expenses???!!!

Time to move to India.
If you lend someone 20 dollars and never see that person again, it's probably worth it.

Oh they took part in WWII, but not a huge portion of the population knows anything about it. some of our best pilots in WWII were Sikhs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_in_World_War_2

I think the Chinese know more about the Sino-Jap war than about WWII (theirs started first)

And I completely agree about being brainwashed by the holocaust shiz. I recently went to Auschwitz (I am currently living in Krakow, Poland and its 40 odd km from here) and what I got out of it was:

• I never knew the Germans used shaved hair from the prisoners to make clothes (sick fucks)
• there is no accurate number of Jews killed in the gas chambers as they were taken off the trains and gassed immediately (so the huge number could be wrong)
• the tour guide made me feel guilty for not doing anything about it

now don’t get me wrong, the holocaust happened, many, many Jews, people of Jewish descent (Germans, Poles, Czechs or anyone whose great granddaddy was a Jew), Poles, Gypsies and gays were killed (they made the homosexuals wear pink stars in the camp) were horrifically killed (there were photos from after the liberation, kinda made me feel sick). I am not denying it happened.

My great grandaunt was a French Jew and she was killed by the Nazi’s during WWII at Birkenau, so it defo happened.

its just that more than Jewish people died at the hands of the SS, people tend to forget that little tit bit
