Hurricane Alex aims at Mexico,Texas

(June 30) -- Hurricane Alex, the first Atlantic hurricane of what may be a very active season, will make landfall tonight along the coast of northern Mexico, its dangerous wind already disrupting oil spill cleanup operations. Hurricane warnings are in effect from coastal southern Texas southward to the coast of northern Mexico.

National Hurricane Center forecasters expect that the storm will have a sustained wind between 90 and100 mph at landfall, which will make it a strong Category 1 or minimal Category 2 hurricane. Unlike many hurricanes, it has the potential to continue to strengthen until landfall, given the warm water and conducive upper-level conditions, so an intense burst of development could result in a stronger Category 2 storm at landfall.
