I recall a discussion with my old Professor of Theology who made this observation, It was many years ago, but I believe he stated:

"Regarding man's search for the divine, you must remember that the observer is human, a human trying to understand the divine, he's peering through a pin-hole at the vastness of creation and declares he know's many of the answers, and like an Abysis, when you stare into it, the abysis stares back, and not just through a pin-hole."

I always thought that was quite humbling.
