A purely Freudian - or perhaps Jungian - interpretation of tidal waves might be:

Water is symbolic of emotion. The deeper the water the deeper and more powerful the emotions. Perhaps being swamped by a tidal wave is symbolic of being swamped by deep - unfathomable - and powerful emotions in your waking life?

When Britain first, at Heaven's command arose from out the azure main; this was the charter of the land, and guardian angels sang this strain: "Rule, Britannia, rule the waves: Britons never will be slaves."

If the wave doesn't hit you but passes through you, maybe that is how you deal with overpowering emotions in waking life? In other words they don't hit and register but rather wash over you.
