Cryptic Messages
From the Assassin's Creed Wiki
* The Eye of Providence: Also called 'All-seeing Eye' or 'Eye of the World'. It's on the ground in front of the door Lucy and Dr. Vidic always leave. The Eye of Horus, also a sign of this, can be found.
o Explanation: The Eye of Providence is always related to conspiracy theories such as the "New World Order". Abstergo industries is planning on releasing a "New World Order", which is why they are extracting information from Desmond Miles. They want to use the Piece of Eden to control the world.
* 12212012: This is the barcode found before the pyramid of letters.
o Explanation: 12/21/2012 is known in different prophecies, such as in the Mayan calendar, for the day the world ends. This is three months after the events of Assassin's Creed and is the date of the release of the modern Templar Satellite. This also links back with the New World Order conspiracy theory noted about above.
* Barcode: This is 13:16-18, a reference to the bible, specifically the book of Revelation. This piece in the bible reads: "He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no-one could buy or sell unless he had the mark wich is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom, if anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person and it's number is 666."
o Explanation: The number 666 is widely known as the "Number of the Beast", and the beast is the Devil as depicted in the Bible. Yet again, this links back to the "New World Order" conspiracy theory.
* Pyramid: The Pyramid of letters means, written backwards from top to bottom, from right to left: "They drained my soul and made it theirs. I drain my body to show you where I saw it". Found after the Eye of Providence, more to the Animus.
o Explanation: "They drained my soul"- this is what the Animus is used for. They [the Templars], took the information and used it. "I drain my body" - Subject 16 used his blood to write all of these messages.
* Three Intertwining Circles: Symbol of the Holy Trinity. Found at the Animus at the side where you lay your head.
o Explanation: Yet another reference to the bible. It relates back to the "New World Order" conspiracy.
* Square: The Square of Letters means, written backwards from top to bottom, from right to left: "Artifacts sent to the skies to control all nations to make us obey a hidden crusade. Don't help them"
o Explanation: "Artifacts sent to the skies" - The Piece of Eden is an artifact. The Templars sent it in a Satellite to control the world.
* Nazca Lines: The famous Nazca lines are drawn by subject 16. They can be found near some computers on a the left platform.
o Explanation: These may point out the location of another Piece of Eden, or maybe a Crystal Skull, which are said to possess miraculous powers.
* I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End: This is referenced to in Desmond's room.
o Explanation': This is a well-known phrase from the bible. It means that God is all-powerful. This yet again links back to the New World Order conspiracy.
* In Desmond's room there are three more types of writing: Hebrew, Arabic and Chinese.
o Explanation: Hebrew-העולם הבא: The writing in Hebrew means "The World to Come"
o Explanation: Arabic-The writing in Arabic means "The Earthquake" which is the 99th Sura of the Qu'ran and tells of Judgement Day and the end of the world.
o Explanation: Asian Texts-Severals quotes relating to the game and its key protagonists.
+ "You reap what you sow."
+ "One who wants to read into his future simply needs to write his own past."
+ "A man without far sight, must have near worries."
+ "Hearing is better than not hearing, observing is better than hearing, knowing is better than observing, and doing is better than knowing."
+ "As a human being, if you want to know the spiritual realm of Buddha, you have to observe, you have to know that everything you see in the world comes from your own mind."
Plot
In September 2012, bartender Desmond Miles is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, a pharmaceutical company, for use as a test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA, then allow Desmond to simulate the experiences of his ancestors in a virtual reality environment. Abstergo intends to put Desmond in the device to simulate the memories of a particular ancestor, Altaïr ibn La-Ahad, a member of a clan of Assassins, specifically Altaïr's experiences during the year 1191 as part of the Third Crusade in the Holy Land. Desmond has trouble adjusting to the device, but eventually relives Altaïr's exploits over the next several days. The game then primarily takes Altaïr's point-of-view, with occasional swaps to Desmond when he exits the Animus.
Altaïr is first shown attempting to retrieve an item known as the "Piece of Eden" from Solomon's Temple with the help of other Assassins, but is stopped by Robert de Sablé, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, the sworn enemies of the assassins. While retrieving the treasure, Altaïr breaks all three tenets of the Assassin's Creed ("Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent," "Hide in plain sight" and "Do not compromise the Brotherhood") within the opening minutes of gameplay, to attempt to kill de Sablé, but fails. Upon returning to the Assassins' stronghold at Masyaf and after narrowly defeating a retaliatory attack by the Templar, Al Mualim, leader of the Assassins, demotes Altaïr to an initiate but gives him another chance to rise through the ranks of the Brotherhood. Al Mualim assigns Altaïr the task of assassinating nine key figures across the Holy Land in Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus, to attempt to bring peace between the Crusader and Saracen forces. Each target is based on real historical figures from around 1191, including Majd Addin (Regent of Jerusalem), Garnier de Nablus (Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller), Jubair al Hakim (an eminent scholar in Damascus), Abu'l Nuqoud (the wealthiest man in Damascus), Grand Master Sibrand of the Teutonic Order and William V, Marquess of Montferrat (Regent of Acre).[9]
Altaïr completes each task, learning how each target is connected to Robert and the Templars, and how together they aim to use the Piece of Eden (which is actually only one of many) to enslave the minds of the population of the Holy Land, bringing "peace" to the land under their rule and robbing the people of free will. With men on both sides killed, he discovers that de Sablé's last ploy is to attempt to unite Christian and Muslim against their new-common enemy, the assassins themselves. Altaïr defeats de Sablé before Richard the Lionheart, failing to convince the king that an end to the war would be welcome to both sides. From de Sablé he discovers that Al Mualim is himself a Templar, and used Altaïr to kill the other members so he could keep the treasure for himself. Altaïr quickly returns to Masyaf to accost his master, who reveals the truth: the Piece of Eden which he had received from one of the men in the Temple after Altaïr's transgression creates illusions. He denounces religion and other seemingly supernatural events (e.g. the parting of the Red Sea, the Ten Plagues of Egypt and the presence of the Greek Gods in the Trojan War) as illusions caused by it, then states his intention to use the artifact to compel mankind into a brainwashed state and so bring an end to all conflict. Altaïr is eventually able to see through deceptions created by the artifact to kill Al Mualim. When Altaïr recovers the artifact, the Piece of Eden activates, showing a holographic view of the world with numerous locations of other Pieces of Eden marked across the globe.
In between sessions in the Animus, Desmond learns from a friendly technician named Lucy Stillman that Abstergo Industries is a modern-day version of the Knights Templar, and are now seeking other artifacts at locations identified in Altaïr's memory. Just before the final session, modern-day Assassins had tried to rescue Desmond before the process was complete but had failed. Desmond was to be killed after completion, but Lucy saves him from death. Though Desmond remains trapped in the Abstergo laboratory, his experience in the Animus has created a "bleeding effect" of Altaïr's life into his own, granting him Altaïr's "Eagle Vision" ability, which allows him to see whether individuals are friendly or hostile to him, which proves to him that Lucy, who earlier bends down her ring finger (the same finger that the Assassins severed in antiquity as a mark of respect) as if to show him that she's on his side, is indeed an ally, as she glows blue. More importantly for Desmond, however, it also allows him to see strange, otherwise invisible messages painted on the floors of the laboratory and the wall of his room. The messages all deal with various forms of the end of the world from different cultures, including several references to the date December 21, 2012, the date that Abstergo plans to launch a satellite that will "permanently end the war". It is hinted at that this will be by the same method that Al Mualim hypnotized Masyaf, only on a larger scale. The game ends on a cliffhanger, with Desmond wondering what these images all mean and who could have drawn them.
