(yeah, I know that some folks dont like wikipedia, but this i have been told in school long time before i had a clue abt interenet)

happens because Earth axis is not in right angle with the orbits plane, and thus in European summer, when Earth axis is pointing towards the sun, north pole can have extremely long days and in winter extremely long nights
