'It’s been called the "Trusted Internet ID" scheme by some observers. It won’t matter what we choose to call the government’s proposed Internet licensing system because in the end we probably won’t have a say in it.

Earlier in the week reported that the US Department of Commerce was preparing to create an Internet ID for all Americans. White House Cyber security Coordinator Howard Schmidt said that the Department of Commerce is "the absolute perfect spot in the US government" to build an online "identity ecosystem."

Right off the bat I can tell you that attempting to force people to identify themselves on a national level doesn’t have much to do with the Department of Commerce’s official mission. We should all be feeling skeptical about this ID scheme.'

1. if this is about wikileaks its pointless because there are non U.S
2. the people that this is ment to stop doing whatever WILL find a way round it again making it pointless
3. There probably doing this to stop you seeing the real stuff and if you do they will know who you are and put you on a list ya know a list ;)
4. chances of this happening are very low because it will probably interfere with your right of free speech and information (not clued in on American laws just speculating)
5. Its like the chips they wanna put in U.K citizens its not gonna happen without one hell of a fight :D

A disturbing development (IMO) the key point of the discussion and proposal validation is contained within this paragraph:

“This entire scheme rests on the ability to link Internet presence/roles with real-world identities. So even if no physical card ever exists, the system as currently understood would very much equate to a national ID card for accessing the Internet.”

Two schools of thought are likely to exist:

1. The old saying 'those with nothing to hide have nothing to fear', so whats the big deal? and
2. Personal private details should not be available within the cyber reality to anyone - unless sanctioned by the individual.

I, for one, fall in the second category.

I suspect it's just another proposed method of internet control by government and will affect only those without the knowledge or technical abilities to circumnavigate the proposed security protocals and not the very people it was intended to restrict (organised cyber criminals for instance).

Also, how would they propose to 'police' the use of these 'cyber I.D'.s? because it would pointless to enact such a system without the means to police it!
