'Iran, an example for Egyptian protesters'

Senior cleric Ayatollah Kazem Seddiqi says the Islamic Revolution in Iran could serve as an enlightening example for pro-democracy protesters in Egypt.
Speaking on the 32nd anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran on Friday, the cleric said Egyptians today can use the revolutionary experience of Iranians.
“The revolutionary leaders of Egypt call our Leader [Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei] 'Imam Khameneh' and they keep the desire to have such a leader in their hearts and voice as well,” Ayatollah Seddiqi.
Tehran's interim Friday Prayers leader also called on the Egyptian nation to maintain their solidarity in the face of enemy efforts aimed at undermining the morale of protesters and creating division among them.
He accused the US and other opponents, who cannot tolerate popular movements, of being behind such attempts.
The remarks came on the 18th day of protests against Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak's three-decade grip on power in the country.
On Thursday night, Mubarak said he would stay in office until the upcoming elections in September despite widespread speculations that he would quit in a few hours and despite calls from a compelling majority of Egyptians urging him to step down and leave the country for good.
Ayatollah Seddiqi said Mubarak's ouster is not one person's departure from Egypt but marks the termination of an anti-Islamic establishment.
“Every current in the Muslim world that supports the Zionist regime [of Israel] and helps the violation of the legitimate rights of Muslim people, Palestinians in particular, is on its last legs and will collapse,” he stated.
The cleric further called on scholars from Cairo's prestigious al-Azhar University to play a more active role and remain united.
