As of Nov. 21, Comet ISON will begin to enter the fields of view of NASA’s space-based solar observatories. Comet ISON will be viewed first in what’s called coronagraphs, images that block the brighter view of the sun itself in order to focus on the solar atmosphere, the corona. Such images – from STEREO and the joint European Space Agency/NASA Solar Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO -- will likely be quite visually compelling. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, will view the comet for a few hours around perihelion. SDO’s imagery should be detailed enough to gather information about how the comet evolves through the radiation and pressure of the sun’s atmosphere.

All of these observatories will have different views. STEREO-A will be the only one that sees the comet transit across the face of the sun. In SDO’s view, the comet will appear to travel above the sun.

The exact dates of view for these observatories is as follows:

Nov 21–28: STEREO-A HI1 sees comet
Nov 26-29: STEREO-B coronagraphs sees comet
Nov 27-30: SOHO sees comet in coronagraphs
Nov 28-29: STEREO-A coronagraphs sees comet
Nov 28: SDO sees comet (for a few hours)

 Thanks Will for all this info. Interesting stuff and saves me from doing research I probably wouldn't do anyways. A lot of folks seem to be freaking out about this comet. It's just a comet!!
Cant wait to see it if it's anything like Hale-bop, that was way cool watching it in the '90's.

Comet ISON is an interesting comet in many ways, but we know it won't hit us. There is speculation among astronomers however, that it could break up into pieces.

Why? Well, that's why we made this video. Please let us know what you think in the comments!

Bruce Gary has been following Ison for some time. I have just found him. Some great info. Some may be hard to digest for laymen like my self. I do think it is a great link to follow.

This website is a record of observations of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) by amateur Bruce Gary, using a Celestron 11-inch telescope at the Hereford Arizona Observatory (G95). My long-term goal used to be a monitoring of the coma by measuring brightness versus diameter at 3 wavelengths (g'r'i') with a goal of detecting brightness outbursts caused by temperature-dependent volatile activity. Measurements on several dates (after reappearing from behind the sun) show that the comet is brightening at a lower rate than expected, as if the activity level on the nucleus surface is actually decreasing! ISON has probably passed the "frost line" so why isn't it brightening instead of fading with respect to a model? I've begun to lose interest in this comet, which may never become visible to the unaided eye. I wonder why someone ever suggested that it could become "comet of the century"?

Thank to everyone posting :flop:

As always items I post are theory and opinions with what info or data the ones opinion has at hand. Mixed ideals everywhere on this topic. But in several more short months we know exactly what will come of Ison.

Here is just a small update. Ison will be at its closets approach to Mars Oct 1st. In the video below it shows how you can add Ison to Stellarium if you use it. I do not use any of the progs that are shown. If you do let me know what your thoughts are on them.

I am in hope we will have more info available to us after it passes by Mars.

There appears to be a forward jet emitting from Ison. Images are rare and ones found are heavily copyrighted. Now Nasa which may be never a true answer is on the shut down if the gov does not get shit together so lets be hopeful that SDO and SOHO ect keep supplying images or info on what is going on.

Anyhow. Here is a vid and the link at bottom of page [Bruce Gary] has the info on Ison.

If you continue to make claims that "NASA never tells the truth...blah blah blah" I will not add to this thread.
It offends me and I wish for you to discontinue such absurd accusations.

Here is the deal. That is what 95% of people comment when you put Nasa up. I thought I would beat them to the punch. I use there stuff all the time as fact. But as far as them giving the public 100% of thier stuff I doubt highly.

I'm sure NASA has many secrets, as does the government. But that is not the same thing as lying.

Say as you wish. I have no fact at hand to say that Nasa has lied. I will not spend countless hours if in fact needed to find a lie. This thread is about Ison. I will refrain from posting malicious comments with out fact.

I appreciate your being forward on the topic and perhaps if i research more we could continue elsewhere another time.

Back to Ison then?
