At least five people have been killed in an attack carried out by an Israeli drone in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, Egyptian security officials say.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Friday that the victims were militants and that Israeli attack was carried out in cooperation with Egyptian army in the restive peninsula.

Last month, Tel Aviv said it had installed rocket launchers near the Sinai Peninsula to counter possible attacks from militants fighting the Egyptian government in the Peninsula.

The Israeli military also deployed the Iron Dome missile system in several areas on Egypt's border.

The Sinai Peninsula has been witnessing a surge in deadly violence since the ouster of former president, Mohamed Morsi, by the army in early June.

On August 7, unknown gunmen shot and killed an Egyptian politician identified as Abdel Hamid Selmi in Sinai's northern town of el-Arish.

On August 5, an Egyptian soldier was killed and two others injured in two separate attacks in the restive peninsula.

Meanwhile, the state news agency, MENA, said in a report that on August 4 unknown militants carried out bomb attacks against two Islamic shrines near the North Sinai town of Bir el-Abd and the area of el-Maghara farther south.

In another incident on the same day, one police officer was injured in a militant attack on a police club in el-Arish.

In July, there were reports of attacks on military checkpoints in Sinai.

Good. Maybe this is a sign the Egyptian military is more moderate and can have an understanding with Israel like with Mubarak.

Well, at least the MSM isn't attempting to cover it up...

An Israeli drone strike killed five suspected Islamic militants and destroyed a rocket launcher in Egypt's largely lawless Sinai Peninsula on Friday, two senior Egyptian security officials said, describing a rare Israeli operation carried out in its Arab neighbor's territory.

The attack came a day after Israel briefly closed its airport in the Red Sea resort of Eilat, close to the Sinai, in response to unspecified security warnings. Eilat was previously targeted by rocket fire from the Sinai.

Israel maintained official silence about the strike, suggesting that if the Jewish state was involved, it might be trying to avoid embarrassing the Egyptian military. An Egyptian military spokesman later denied the report but did not provide another cause for the explosion.

Egypt's official MENA news agency said an explosion destroyed a rocket launcher set up near the border to launch attacks against Israel, and at least five Islamic militants were killed. But it did not elaborate.

Straight out of Russian news, Vladimir Putin has called for the nation’s strategic bombers to enter a state of ‘full combat readiness’ following the ‘snap drills’ that were initiated after Israel bombed Russian-made missiles within Syria.

it look like the Russian don't bite the Saudian bate.

Russia has reportedly rebuffed an offer by Saudi Arabia to abandon its support for the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad in exchange for a package of incentives.

On Thursday, AFP quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Moscow had rejected an offer by Saudi Arabia to change its stance on Syria in return for a huge arms deal and a promise to increase Moscow’s influence in the Arab countries.

In a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on July 31, Saudi intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan offered a package of economic incentives to Russia.

Bandar offered to buy up to USD 15 billion of Russian weapons besides ensuring that Persian Gulf gas would not challenge Russia's gas sales to Europe, according to Syrian opposition sources close to Saudi Arabia.

In return, Riyadh wants Moscow to lessen its support for the Syrian government and no longer block any United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions on Syria.

A former Saudi ambassador to US, Bandar is currently director general of Saudi Intelligence Agency. He is known to have had close ties with former US President George Bush, and was an advocate of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Some observers believe that Saudi Arabia’s ally, the US, has indeed tasked Bandar bin Sultan with causing unrest in many regional countries including Syria.

On Tuesday, Saudi King Abdullah appointed Bandar bin Sultan’s brother, Prince Salman bin Sultan, as Deputy Defense Minister. Bandar has already worked closely alongside his brother in favor of foreign-backed militants in Syria to topple Syria's Assad.

Saudi Arabia along with other US allies in the region has been a key supporter of the militants fighting the Assad government in Syria.

Riyadh has also called for foreign military intervention to topple President Assad’s government.

Meanwhile, some reports suggest that Saudi Arabia is planning to get involved in Yemen militarily for the second time over the past four years.

Back in 2009, Saudi entered a direct war with Houthi fighters in northern Yemen.

Saudi Arabia also sent troops to neighboring Bahrain in 2011 to crush a popular uprising there.

It also threw its full weight behind the Egyptian army’s ouster of first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi.

Saudi Arabia is itself grappling with anti-monarch protests. Dozens of anti-government protesters have been killed in the regime crackdown in the restive Eastern Province.
