Whale Wars contiune :flop:

Japan’s research whaling fleet has reported three minor injuries caused by chemical projectiles in a five hour long hostile conflict with the Sea Shepherds during the evening of February 11th (JST), but the whale conservationist group has denied all accusations as distorted or completely fabricated.

Japanese Research Whaling report of Feb. 11th incident

The Institute of Cetacean Research stated in a press release and accompanying photos that during the February 11th conflict projectiles containing chemicals were fired by the Sea Shepherds at the Japanese research fleet. The substance, which is said to be Butyric acid – a chemical found in rancid butter, was reported to have hit the faces of three Japanese crew members. Those hit complained of irritations on the skin and eyes, but no major injuries, the Yomiuri reported.

The Institute also reported that the Sea Shepherds tried to “sabotage the Nisshin Maru” (the Japanese fleet’s mothership), specifically by towing a wire rope in front of the vessel for the purpose of jamming the ships rudder and propeller. Other reported types of attacks include repeated uses of a high-powered laser, and smoke bombs.

Sea Shepherd Whale Conservationist report of Feb. 11th incident

The Sea Shepherds quickly denied all claims. In a press release they stated the conflicted started when the Japanese entered the “Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary,” and would not leave after multiple warnings. They reported that while they did throw rotten butter bombs on the decks of the Japanese ships, “claims by Japan that rotten butter caused injuries to sailors is bogus…Butyric acid is a foul smelling substance but does not cause harm upon skin contact.”

The Sea Shepherds further state that they “did not attempt to foul the propellers of the Japanese whalers as claimed by the ICR.” They state that the device deployed was purely a defensive maneuver.

Furthermore, the Sea Shepherds reported that Japanese fleet tried to use “Long Range Acoustical Weapons” and water cannons on them. They claim that the Japanese fleet even tried to destroy their helicopter with water cannons as it was taking off from one of their ships decks.

No end in sight for whaling conflict

Despite the recent intensity of the conflicts, it is not likely to stop at least until the season is over. These sorts of incidents between the two sides are not new – there have been continuing scuffles in recent years, and similar light injuries from rancid butter projectiles to that of the February 11th incident were reported by Japanese crew members in March of 2008.

Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Hirotaka Akamatsu, said he felt “extreme anger” about the conflict, the Jiji Press reported. The Institute of Cetacean Research condemns the Sea Shepherd’s acts against its “legal research activities,” and calls for the countries were the activists boats are registered to deal them in “a strict and objective manner.” The Sea Shepherds states that they “will not compromise on the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.”

Quote:
SYDNEY (AFP) – An anti-whaling activist has boarded a Japanese security ship to make a citizen's arrest of its captain over last month's sinking of a high-tech boat, an animal rights group said on Monday.

New Zealand's Pete Bethune, captain of the futuristic Ady Gil powerboat which was smashed in two on January 6, jumped aboard the Japanese ship from a jetski under the cover of darkness, the Sea Shepherd group said.

"This was an impossible mission," spokesman Paul Watson said in a statement.

"Captain Bethune boarded a Japanese whaling fleet security ship at high speed in total darkness, breached the spikes and anti-boarding nets and is presently onboard and the Japanese crew are still not aware that he is there.

"He is there to demand justice for the sinking of his ship."

Sea Shepherd said Bethune would try to arrest the Shonan Maru 2's captain for "the destruction of the Ady Gil and attempted murder of the six Ady Gil crewmembers".

He would also attempt to hand over a three million US dollar bill for the destruction of the state-of-the-art trimaran, which set the round-the-world powerboat record under its former name, Earthrace.

"Sea Shepherd anticipates that the Japanese will hold Captain Bethune as prisoner onboard the Shonan Maru 2," the group's statement added.

The activists claim to have saved the lives of hundreds of whales by harassing the annual hunt, which kills the animals using a loophole in an international moratorium which allows "lethal research".

Australia and New Zealand have called for restraint from both sides in their Antarctic clashes, with the activists deploying laser-like devices and stink bombs and the Japanese fleet operating military-style acoustic weapons.
