They are studying the atmosphere of one of the two closest planets to Earth. Mars supposedly has no atmosphere but Venus does.
Seems somewhat obvious to me why they would be looking at the atmosphere of a planet close to us.

I think it's just a fun way of motivating their citizens (especially younger generation) to get interested in stars and universe in general sense. Japanese people love to do this type of campaign.
