Jordan: Syrian pilot defects in fighter jet

Syria's state-run TV said Thursday that authorities had lost contact with a military plane that was on a training mission in the country, as officials in neighboring Jordan reportedly said the plane had landed in that country, suggesting a defection.
According to Syrian TV, the military lost contact with the MiG-21 warplane near the border with Jordan late in the morning. The report said the plane was piloted by a Col. Hasan Merhi al-Hamadeh.
Arab television networks quoted the Jordanian information minister as saying the pilot had requested political asylum in Jordan.
