Throughout New York City subway stations, posters that state "in any war between civilized man and the savage support the civilized man. Support Israel defeat Jihad," have stirred up a lot of controversy. Many people in the city have defaced the ads which have been seen as hate speech, but one journalist decided to spray paint the ad in order to stand against which she calls racism. Mona Eltahawy was arrested for graffiti and criminal mischief, but are these ads hate speech or free speech or both? According to the authoritative Dictionary of Islam jihad is defined as: "A religious war with those who are unbelievers in the mission of Muhammad ... enjoined especially for the purpose of advancing Islam and repelling evil from Muslims."
