Carbon dioxide is not the only substance released into the air when permafrost melts.

Laughing Gas

Research results from northwestern Greenland document that thawing permafrost can cause surprisingly high levels of Nitrous oxide (N2O) into the environment, which may potentially be released into the atmosphere. More commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is 300 times worse than carbon dioxide in connection with the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the depletion of the ozone layer.
