Leslie Nielsen, the star of classic comedy films such as Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has passed away at the age of 84.
The Canadian actor and comedian was reported dead by a Canadian radio station, CJOB, and confirmed by Nielsen's cousin, Doug.
Doug told CJOB that Leslie was hospitalised for 12 days in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"He just fell asleep and passed away," he said in a statement, adding that his immediate family and closest friends were by his side at the time.
The cause of death is believed to be pneumonia, according to unconfirmed reports on Twitter.
Mr. Nielsen was a much loved and respected actor, who had a highly prolific career spanning six decades.
In his time as an actor, Wikipedia states that Nielsen appeared in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs, portraying over 220 characters.
Amongst the best known of these are the doctor in the 1980 film Airplane!, which was Nielsen's first comedy role, and Frank Drebin, star of both the Police Squad! television series and The Naked Gun movie saga.
He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as well as Canada's Walk of Fame.
In 2002, he was ordained an officer of the Order of Canada - even after becoming a naturalised United States citizen.
He is survived by two children from his second marriage, Maura and Thea Nielson, and his fourth wife Barbaree Earl.

We keep so much from our friends and family. Why can't we all just say
how we feel and not get mad at each other?
