Edward Archbold collapsed and died after scoffing dozens of live insects as part of the event.

30 contestants turned up at Ben Siegel Reptile Store near Miami to take part in the peculiar event which involved eating large quantities of live cockroaches and other critters. Archbold actually won the contest but soon complained of feeling ill before collapsing outside the store. He was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead, authorities are now investigating the cause.

"Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," said entomology professor Michael Adams. The insects used in the contest were taken from domestically bred stock used as food for reptiles.

I beg to differ. In a survival situation, anything goes; but eating those nasty bugs for fun is plain nasty.
