Published on 09-24-2009

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Marines are landing in our backyard.

2,300 Marines are converging on this region for two weeks of intensive training in preparation for an upcoming deployment.

Part of the training involves exercises in small cities in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Simulated missions will take place in Frankfort late next week.

Beginning today, you may see Marine aircraft in the skies. They include the Cobra and Chinook helicopters and Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

The Marines, from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, will base their training at Camp Atterbury in southern Indiana.

NORAD and USNORTHCOM exercise planned for mid-June
PETERSON AFB, Colo. – North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command are planning to conduct a combined exercise June 18 - 24 that will incorporate several military exercises with a National Guard exercise. These linked exercises are referred to as ARDENT SENTRY 09. Events will take place in multiple venues across the country including Iowa, Kansas, Oregon, Wyoming, and off the East and West Coasts.

The exercise will allow several Department of Defense organizations and some federal and state partners to implement plans and respond to a variety of notional events. Historically, exercises like these have helped both DoD and other agencies review their processes and procedures and focus their future training efforts on closing gaps and identifying areas that need additional attention.

Major AS 09 venues include:

NORAD’s AMALGAM DART exercise involving air defense activities at Camp Rilea, Oregon;
The National Guard’s VIGILANT GUARD exercise focused on civil support with major activities in Des Moines, Iowa and Topeka, Kansas; and,
A Nuclear Weapons Incident exercise (NUWAIX) with a U.S. Air Force response near Cheyenne, Wyoming;
The activities in the vicinity of Camp Rilea will involve the deployment of an Army National Guard ground-based air defense system that will be integrated with Air Force airborne systems (AWACS and fighters) and a Navy Aegis Destroyer. (Media interested in covering this event should contact Mr. Al Eakle at 1-850-283-8080)

Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska National Guard units will respond to multiple events in Iowa and Kansas including simulated train derailments and foreign animal disease. (Media interested in covering events in Iowa should contact LTC Greg Hapgood at 515-971-6385; for events in Kansas, contact Sharon Watson at 785-274-1192)

In Wyoming, Air Force Space Command will respond to an incident involving a simulated nuclear weapon. (Media interested in covering this should contact Capt. Sharbe Clark at 719-554-3815).

NORAD is a bi-national United States and Canada organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. USNORTHCOM provides command and control of DoD homeland defense efforts and, when directed, provides timely and effective defense support of civil authorities. (see www.norad.mil and www.northcom.mil for more information)

For more information about the exercise, contact NORAD and USNORTHCOM Public Affairs at 719-554
NORAD exercise planned for Chicago
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR), will conduct a one-day exercise, Falcon Virgo 09-Windy City-One, July 21 in Chicago.

The exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center, Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control, the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, Customs and Border Protection and CONR’s Eastern Air Defense Sector.

Windy City Virgos are designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations, especially over newly-designed airspace around Chicago. Customs and Border Protection aircraft and Air Force F-16 will participate in the exercise. Residents in the area can expect flights to occur during the late night and early morning hours beginning Tuesday at 1 a.m. and continuing through the scheduled exercise hours.

In the event of inclement weather, the exercise will be rescheduled at a later date. Falcon Virgo Windy City-Two and Windy City-Three are future exercises that have yet to be scheduled.

These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure NORAD’s rapid response capability. NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command’s response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

As the Continental United States geographical component of the bi-national command NORAD, CONR provides airspace surveillance and control, and directs air sovereignty activities for the CONUS region. CONR and its assigned Air Force and Army assets throughout the country ensure air safety and security against potential air threats.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, NORAD fighters have responded to more than 2,100 possible air threats in the United States and have flown more than 51,000 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air-to-air-refueling aircraft
NORAD exercise planned in northwestern Washington State and southwestern British Columbia
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – The North American Aerospace Defense Command will be conducting exercises in northwestern Washington and southwestern British Columbia Aug. 12-13. These exercises, dubbed Fabric Virgo for the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) and Falcon Virgo for the Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR), are being carried out in support of preparations for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games.

Residents in the exercise areas may hear aircraft noise and perhaps see aircraft flying at various times throughout the two-day period.

Comprised of a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NAV CANADA (NAVCAN), these exercises are designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations. They are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure NORAD’s rapid response capability. NORAD has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout Canada and the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001.

NORAD is a bi-national Canadian and American command that employs a network of space, air, and ground-based sensors, air-to-air refueling tankers and fighter aircraft, controlled by a sophisticated command and control network in order to deter, detect and defend against aerial threats that originate outside or within North American airspace

The exercise is comprised of a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and CONR’s Eastern Air Defense Sector.

Exercise Falcon Virgo is designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations, as well as procedural tests of the NCR Visual Warning System. Civil Air Patrol aircraft and Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopters will participate in the exercise.

Residents in the area can expect flights to occur during the late night and early morning hours beginning Wednesday at midnight and continuing through the scheduled exercise hours.
