theres reports comming in of a massive light in the sky which has been seen from england ireland scotland and wales

'Meteors' sighted in skies across UK

People from across the UK have reported seeing bright objects in the sky, thought to be meteors.

Belfast coastguard has taken calls from people who saw the objects from Coleraine on the north coast, to Strangford Lough in the south east. Sightings were also made in Dublin.

The lights were also seen in parts of central Scotland including Grangemouth, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

And the object has been seen in Norfolk and at Walsall in the West Midlands.

One person who contacted the BBC said it was "kind of a mass of light, gold light. Everything moving in unison".

"It wasn't diverging or whatever. I thought it was a plane at first. It was quite low on the horizon and moving much slower than I'd expect to see a shooting star, but it was amazing."

Another said the sight was "like Independence Day" in reference to the film about an alien invasion of Earth.

"It was broken up by the time I saw it. There must have been 10 or 15 huge pieces on fire, white hot with red down the side."

Twitter went into meltdown this evening as hundreds of people reported seeing a comet or meteor shower over the north west of England.

Flashing lights apparently flew across the night sky at just before 11pm, sending people across the region into a frenzy.

Llinos Thomas, a 30-year-old dentist and Boyfriend Matt Brennen, a 26-year-old engineer, were among those who witnessed the unlikely events.

Mr thomas said: "We were on the A55 from Chester towards North Wales and we thought we saw a firework.

"It was a massive cluster of lights in the sky, but travelling really quickly West and that's when we realised it was a meteor shower.

"It was travelling at really high speed for ten seconds and died out and faded away."
