Massive solar storm 'could knock out radio signals'
Massive solar storm 'could knock out radio signals' over next three days, warn scientists
Skywatchers will be hoping for clear skies from today because particles from a recent solar storm will slam into Earth and produce amazing Northern Lights, or auroras.
On the downside, experts expect radio blackouts for a few days, caused by the radiation from the flare – or coronal mass ejection (CME) – causing magnetic storms.
The flare is part of a larger increase in activity in the Sun, which runs in 11-year cycles. It is expected to peak around 2013

This incoming CME will only disrupt HF radio transmissions and could potentially create some spotty cell phone related transmissions...with very slight possible dish satellite disruption.
This is a very mild solar eruption, but is most definitely the sign of the beginning of the 2012 cycle.
We have about 48 hours left where there is a very small window for an X class flare from sunspot 1368, however if it does occur it shouldn't be more than an X1 to X2 range. More than likely it will not occur as the magnetic field has greatly reduced over the past 24 hours and only sports a < 10% chance.
We shouldn't see any major flares until sometime towards the end of the first quarter of 2012...
Basically, if you see an Earth directed X class flare that exceeds the X4 range then you can expect to see some very odd happenings regarding electronics... but most everything (under *most circumstances*) less than an X4 is going to be relatively mild.
The middle of 2012 and towards the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2012 is where we could see some "heavy hitter" flares that could create havoc in our electronic age.
Plenty of time to figure out what you would do if the power went out and wasn't turned back on for several months...depending upon the flare size/magnitude and the state of the economy of where you live...could be upwards of 12 to 16+ months.
That is...something like an X10+ flare...which if Earth directed would take out a good chunk of the transformers...especially in the more Northern and Southern regions of the hemisphere.
Cheers,
